While Katie Holmes may have filed for divorce last week, Tom Cruise has much to celebrate as he turns 50.
Born on July 3 1962 in Syracuse, New York, he started off life as Tom Cruise Mapother IV.
The actor shot to fame in the early 1980s when he danced in his underwear and sunglasses in Risky Business. The film Top Gun, arguably his most successful, took his fame to even more dizzying heights.
Tom’s career went from strength to strength as he took on a wide variety of roles in many blockbuster films, which include Jerry Maguire, Cocktail, A Few Good Men, the Mission: Impossible series, Interview With a Vampire and Rain Man.
But alongside his outstanding career his three marriages – to Mimi Rogers, actress Nicole Kidman and until recently Katie Holmes – and his Scientology beliefs have fascinated the world.
