Not for the faint hearted, this French rape revenge thriller centers around a woman (played by Isabelle Huppert) who is assaulted in her own home. Described as “empowering” by critics, this one is for thriller lover everywhere.
Moana
One for the kids now. Strong willed Moana must travel across oceans to find Maui in the hope of saving her people. Fun for all the family.
Rogue One: A Star Wars story (Out now)
The latest offering from the Star Wars fans has die-hard fans divided, but if the trailer is anything to go by – it looks like a thrill a minute.
The Catch (January 5)
A fishing comedy based on a true story – this Kiwi addition to the summer selection centres around two mates taking part in Kaipara Harbour fishing contest. Capturing Kaipara’s rugged beauty, the film has already been praised by the likes of Mike Hosking –and is sure to be a hit with locals and fishermen alike.
Jackie (January 12)
Hotly anticipated Jackie stars an impossible elegant Natalie Portman in the title role, as she goes from young First Lady to devastated window. Movie insiders have said this will be one of the films of the year – and we’ll definitely be giving it a watch when it hits cinemas in the middle of Jan.
Lion (January 19)
Another tear-jerker of a movie, Lion stars Dev Patel – an adopted Australian originally from India. As he grows up, he begins to remember details of his old life, and begins a search for his biological family. Following him on his search for home, this is a real cry your heart out movie.
Manchester by the Sea (January 26)
Ben Affleck’s little bro has his first real shot at a lead role in this grief drama, that’s already being tipped for an Oscar. Also starring indie movie queen Michelle Williams, this is a touching portrayal of family members struggling to come to terms with death, growing up and love.
Patriots Day (February 2)
Most of us remember the horrific event that happened at the Boston Marathon in 2013, and now Mark Wahlberg stars in a tale about the day – when two bombs were set off at the finish line.
Pork Pie (February 2)
The remake of the 1981 classic Goodbye Pork Pie stars James Rolleston, Dean O’Gorman and Ashleigh Cummings – who all become accidental outlaws, trying to outrun the law in a tiny yellow mini.
Split (February 2)
M. Night Shyamalan has always known how to send a tingle down our spine – and this latest offering is no different. Starring Scottish hunk James McAvoy, Split really gets under your skin. And McAvoy is just incredible as a man suffering with multiple personality disorder.
Gold (February 9)
Remember when Matthew McConaughey only played handsome rom-com roles? Well those days are over. Following on from his recent success in hard drama roles, this time he plays relentless gold prospector Kenny Wells.
