Ronan Keating breaks down at Stephen Gately

Boyzone lead singer Ronan Keating broke down in tears as he spoke at his late bandmate Stephen Gately’s funeral in Dublin. The Irishman wept as he told the 1000+ mourners he’d “lost a brother and my wingman”, adding that his colleague would stay “forever young, never forgotten”.

Ronan explained that Boyzone would carry on “for Stephen, but it will never be the same without him”. He also said he’d make it his personal mission to finish the children’s book ‘The Tree of Seasons’ that Stephen had almost completed writing at the time of his death.

Celebrities at the funeral included the Irish band Westlife, former Westlife singer Brian ocFadden and Sir Elton John’s partner David Furnish. A top hat was carried down the aisle of St Laurence o’Toole church, where the funeral was held, to commemorate the 2006 civil union between Stephen and his husband Andrew Cowles.

Boyzone member Mikey Graham told mourners, “Stephen’s love for Andrew was true. only last week, he told me how lucky he felt to have him by his side.” Stephen died suddenly at the age of 33 on the Spanish island of oajorca. Despite rumours of an eight-hour drinking binge that caused him to choke on his own vomit, an autopsy revealed he died of natural causes due to fluid in his lungs.
