The latest outing from the Coen Brothers is a melancholy tale set in 1961 about a folk singer who is down on his luck. Armed with a runaway cat, Llewyn (Oscar Isaac) heads to Chicago to find fame, but can’t shake off the cynicism which clouds his hopeful music. Dotted with unusual characters, such as Llewyn’s former lover (Carey Mulligan) and his ailing companion (John Goodman), this is less indulgent than recent Coen films but is filled with the same quirky humour found in their classic movie Fargo.
