Former director of the FBI J Edgar Hoover was famous for covering up his own tracks but there’s no reason this biopic, directed by Clint Eastwood, should tread so lightly. Known for his role in ending the gangster wars of the 1930s, as well as blackmailing presidents and wiretapping during the Cold War, there should have been plenty of material to flesh out the controversial figure, but the film only dabbles in the juicy bits. It’s also too cautious about J Edgar’s widely assumed relationship with his co-worker Clyde Tolson which, if we are to believe the film, was never consummated. Leonardo DiCaprio does his best with the weak script, performing well despite wearing shonky aging makeup for a portion of the film.
