Diane McDermott’s death has been ruled as an accidental shooting for the last four decades, but in 2011 Dylan asked police to reopen the case.

Golden Globe winner Dylan was five when Diane was shot in the head in February 1967 at their home in Connecticut.

Dylan was outside at the time, having been kicked out the house by his mother’s boyfriend at the time, gang member John Sponza.

“Dylan vividly recalls the amount of times, [Sponza] not only flashing the gun, but pointing it at the kid, saying ‘Shut up and get out of here.’ He’s still probably traumatized by that,” police told the Republican-American newspaper.

Since reopening the case, police have found that Sponza murdered Diane – and shockingly discovered that police had covered up the crime.

Dylan (50) hasn’t commented about the investigation, but police told the Republican-American Dylan said, “In order for me to survive and to get where I am today, I needed to bury that moment in my life deep within myself.

“He said it wasn’t until recently ‘that I’ve come to the point in my life where I’m able to begin to process all of this’.”

Dylan has also appeared in Steel Magnolias and In the Line of Fire, and won a Golden Globe for his role in The Practice.
