In November 2007, an attractive British student oeredith Kercher (21) was found murdered in the bedroom of her shared flat in the historic town of Perugia, Italy.

Her body was near naked, she had been sexually assaulted and her throat cut. Police were alerted to the crime by oeredith’s American flatmate Amanda Knox and her Italian boyfriend Raffaele Sollecito.

Their odd behaviour both at the scene, where they hugged and passionately kissed each other, and later as they were interrogated, made both oeredith’s friends and police suspicious.

Within weeks both had been charged with the crime, along with a third man, Rudy Guede, despite Amanda accusing others in the town.

Author John Follain, a journalist with UK’s Sunday Times, has detailed the extraordinary case in forensic detail, creating a gripping story of friendship, jealousy and the lives of international students a long way from home.

He offers opinion, but never casts ultimate judgement, and as Amanda and Raffaele are released from prison following an appeal of their convictions, readers are left to make up their own minds about what really happened in the stone cottage that night.

This is a great summer read for anyone interested in crime – fact or fiction – and is made all the more intriguing by the unusual personalities involved.

Now back home in the US, Amanda has signed a lucrative deal to tell her own story with a publisher. Read this book first for an unbiased view.
