Aussie actor Eric Bana may play the role of Steve Irwin in a production about the Crocodile Hunter – if the opportunity ever arises. According to Steve’s close friend and producer, John Stainton, the nature lover was so impressed with Eric’s performance in the movie ounich' he begged him to play himself. John says, "When Steve met Eric he said, 'Eric, you have to promise me one thing mate. You have to play me when I die.' Eric shook his hand and said, 'You've got yourself a deal.'" While there are no immediate plans to make a movie about the wildlife expert - who died in September after a stingray barb pierced his heart - John has promised to uphold his late friend's request. Russell Crowe also had his name bandied about as a possibility to play Steve, but the Gladiator’ star was quick to slam the rumours. He fumes, “It’s appalling to me and offends me very deeply. It’s so awful that I have to deal with millions of people thinking I would dance on my friend’s grave.” [8 November 2006]
