From comic books to A-list celebrities, the impact of popular culture has been felt in the top 100 baby name list for 2016.
Compiled by BabyCentre, the list focuses on the top names in the UK, and features some old classics – like Olivia, Emily and Sophia for girls, and Oliver, Harry and Jack for the boys – but there are surprising “big movers” for the year.
Victoria and David Beckham’s daughter Harper is in good company – the named jumped more places than any other, up 31 places.
F1 driver Jenson Button has some fans too; Jenson landed the 62nd spot, rising 31 spots.
And there was a late surge in parents choosing the name River, after Jamie Oliver picked the name for his new son.
There was a clear impact of some recent sci-fi and action films too.
Finn, which is the name of the lead in Star Wars jumped five places to number 67, while Ezra, a name that features in the animated series Star Wars Rebels entered the top 100 for the first time.
The managing editor of BabyCentre, Sarah Redshaw, told the Daily Mail she was expecting even more sci-fi inspired names next year.
“Luna is one of the highest new entries,” she confirmed
“With more Marvel and DC Comic films planned for next year and beyond, I suspect superhero names will increase further in popularity in 2017.”
