Dear Wendyl,oy wife and I split three months ago after 10 years of marriage. It wasn’t pleasant but we were quite amicable, and I agreed to move out of the house while she stayed in it and eventually we will sell it and take half each. My main problem is that even though she agreed to pay the bills – such as electricity and telephone – after I left, she hasn’t. As they are in my name I’m now getting the hassle and I’m worried this will affect my credit rating. I’ve talked to her about it and she says she’ll pay them but I think she has no intention of doing so, and she is using this to get at me because I have a new girlfriend. How can I make her pay up? *

Dear Bill,oy first response is don’t pay them and then she’ll get everything cut off and have to pay to get it back on. But by then your credit rating and your chances of getting those services anywhere else will be dodgy. If I were you, and presuming you can afford it, I would pay them but keep a record of these payments. When it comes time to split your assets, which I presume you are planning to do with the sale of the house, produce them to your lawyer and make sure you are refunded.Wendyl
