For Laura McGoldrick, Christmas is often a time of year dominated by cricket with her Black Cap hubby Martin Guptill either training or playing a game. This December, however, they’re planning a blissful cricket-free lunch with family and a trip to the beach with their two-year-old girl Harley.

“This is the first time in almost 10 years that he has a couple of days off around Christmas, which is really exciting – it’s a chance to relax,” smiles The Hits radio host. “Although I might let a little bit of fun beach cricket slide because I quite like that!”

One of Laura’s favourite childhood festive traditions was leaving out milk and a cookie for Santa, plus some carrots for his reindeer. It’s now something she’s excited to continue with her own little girl.

“At the stage I’m at with my daughter, we are creating new traditions as well. Now she’s two and a lot more aware, she might want to leave something different for Santa!” laughs Laura, 30.

When it comes to the silly season, food is also an important factor for the bubbly blonde beauty.

“It’s all about family and the food,” Laura shares. “Growing up, I always helped Mum in the kitchen. I’d get to help out with the cooking and preparing the table. Mum would make trifle, my Uncle Wayne would do the crackling … everyone had their signature dish.

“At the end of the day, Christmas is all about family getting together, enjoying each other’s company, eating beautiful food, laughing and remembering people who aren’t there with you. It’s really a great day of reflection for the year too.”
