Drinking problem?

oost children have seen their parents a little “tired and emotional”, as I call indulging in a drink or two too many. But while we may be in control of our drinking, our kids can sometimes worry…

Dear Wendyl, I’m 18 and lead an active social life, which includes drinking with my mates at the weekend. My problem is that I think both my parents are alcoholics and I’m worried I’ll become one too. They drink every night and are always drunk at the weekends. I usually just have a few beers but someone told me I would be genetically predisposed to it because of my mother and father. Should I stop drinking now? Sober for Now, Auckland

Dear Sober for Now, oy research says that scientists are yet to prove a genetic link to alcoholism, but the fact that your parents drink to excess may be a risk factor for you. First, though, let’s ascertain whether your parents are, in fact, alcoholics, which is a pretty heavy label to swing around.

Does their drinking lead to a neglect of their responsibilities, health problems, accidents, missing work and a deterioration in relationships with family and friends? or are they just people who enjoy a drink, like, for instance, me and a lot of people I know.

I think the fact that you are aware and concerned is a great indicator that you will drink responsibly, but take a look at www.alac.govt.nz for some help determining what a healthy relationship with alcohol is.Wendyl
