Kevin Milne: Check yourself

Why do you still have to check out at hotels?

Last weekend, I spent 15 minutes in a queue waiting to check out of a hotel.

Why do you still have to check out at hotels, especially if you have nothing further to pay? After all, you’ve given them authority to deduct from your credit card when you arrive. Should I just walk out the door if there’s a queue in future?

You raise a good point. I’d  have walked out the door and contacted the hotel when I got home.

Many people like to know exactly what they’ve been charged for before they leave the hotel. If there are any disputes, they can be settled over the counter.

There will also be a significant number of business guests who require a receipt to make a claim. There may even be a requirement in your contract that all debts be paid before you leave.

But the fact remains, the hotel has authority to charge any debts against your card number, which it will have taken an imprint of when you arrived.

If you have to catch a bus or plane urgently, don’t wait in line.

Wait until you get home, then ring or email the hotel with details of what you took from the fridge and where they should send your receipt.

It’s their fault if there are queues. They need more staff at peak times in the morning.
