She’s just six years old and already Danielle Adlam is making a mighty contribution to animal welfare as an SPCA Treat Week fundraising superstar.
Her support of the organisation was sparked earlier this year when she and mum Johannah discovered four sickly kittens abandoned by a stream while out for a walk.
Seeing the tiny creatures in danger and desperately trying to climb a bank to follow their fleeing mother, Johannah and Danielle immediately called their local Palmerston North SPCA.
“While we waited for help to arrive, Danielle kept the kittens away from the water and took care of them all,” shares mum Johannah, 24, proudly.
Big-hearted Danielle bonded with one kitten in particular, the runt of the litter, whom she named Tiger.
“His eyes were practically glued shut,” recalls Johannah.
Thanks to the devotion and care of the SPCA, all the kittens were adopted into forever homes, but not before Danielle got to visit them for some last cuddles.
“It was so heart-warming to see Danielle and Tiger looking at each other, after worrying whether or not he would lose his eyes to sickness,” says vet nurse student Johannah. “Ever since, she has been working very hard to raise as much money as she can for the SPCA.”
Danielle’s efforts have included donating many of her belongings to SPCA op shops, setting up donation jars, making bracelets to sell and now fundraising for Treat Week.

She has already raised more than $1700, which is enough to cover 32 vet exams for shelter animals, and far surpassed her initial goal of $1000.
Danielle concludes, “Thank you everyone for raising money for the SPCA. And thank you, SPCA, for helping the animals and all that you have done that has made the animals feel better.”
