The Warehouse New Zealand has launched an innovative new feature in partnership with Women’s Refuge – to allow women in violent relationships to seek help confidentially.

On their website, The Warehouse has installed a small button at the bottom of the page – which leads to an untraceable portal.

In the portal is information on getting help and getting out of an abusive relationship – whether that’s immediately or in the near future.

There’s a contact form so women looking to leave their violent partners can find refuge, as well as advice on what to do in dangerous situations.

Women’s refuge Chief Exec Dr Ang Jury said the new development aims to combat ways in which abusive partners are now stalking and tracking their victim’s online behaviour.

“We’ve noticed an increasingly disturbing trend of perpetrators using smartphones, software and apps to track and stalk women, during and after the relationship has ended,” she said.

“The very tools we hope would assist a woman in seeking help are being used to abuse, and we needed to do something about that.

“One of the most dangerous times in an abusive relationship is when a woman is thinking about leaving, or in the immediate time after she has left; this is a stage where offering support in a discreet way is crucial to keeping her safe.

“We have a partnership with The Warehouse where we are continually looking for ways to work together to keep women and children safe from violence, and this is a unique way that we can do this. Using The Warehouse’s website, we can provide another safe and secure way for victims of domestic violence to get help and advice.”
