Fake bag, fake relationship?

Everyone is guilty of telling the occasional white lie to their partner, but when one of you gets caught out on a whopper, it's time to have a closer look at exactly what's going on.

Dear Wendyl,

A few years ago my husband bought me a Louis Vuitton handbag for my birthday. I treasured it, using it every day. Recently the gold monogram fell off so I took it to a Louis Vuitton store hoping they might fix it.

They took one look at it and told me it was a fake. I couldn’t believe it, as my husband told me it cost hundreds. I haven’t said anything to him as I don’t want to start a row, but I feel really cheated. What would you do?

Keri, Auckland

Dear Keri,

You have to wonder what else your husband has been misrepresenting to you over the years. Is that ring you’re wearing really a diamond? Tell him what you found out, taking the focus away from what he did and directing it to how he made you feel – how you find it difficult to trust him now.

He’ll deny it all, but he’ll know you’re on to him and might fess up eventually. If honesty becomes an issue, then get some counselling – because without trust and honesty, marriages are very hard to sustain.
