Six things you can do with banana peel

Slinging that banana peel straight in the bin? Reduce waste and get the most out of your fruit by reusing the peel in one of these five ingenious ways.

Vinegar

You can create your own vinegar from the peel of fruit and veg. For details, see this tutorial here.

Compost

Hardened gardeners will already know this, but banana peels are great for using on plants. They can help your tomatoes grow big and strong and are fantastic composted down and used on the veggie patch.

Animal feed

If you have chickens, pigs, rabbits or cows, banana peel can be ground down and fed to them as part of their diet.

Insect bites & rashes

Got a big bite or grass rash? Rub some peel on the area to help soothe it and promote faster healing. This also apparently works if you suffer from eczema. This works because the peel contains fatty acids that can help treat the skin.

Polish leather and silver

Rub the pithy side of the peel onto leather shows, jackets or furniture and then buff with a soft cloth. You can also blend the peel with water and use the mix to shine up your silver.

Attract butterflies

Butterflies will be drawn to the sweetness in the peel, so if you’re trying to create an insect haven in your garden this summer – place them outside on a raised platform.
