The smart girl’s guide to drinking

The festive season is on its way and with it comes cocktails, bubbly and beers at barbecues. There is no getting away from the fact that all alcohol is high in caloric content but you can minimise the damage by sticking to more “diet-friendly” drinks.

As a rule, the best drinks to stick to are dry white wine or clear spirits with a sugar-free mixer. Red wine has half the calories of white and champagne is also okay. The health-conscious need to watch out for drinks such as sugary alco-pops and cocktails with added cream such as pina coladas and White Russians. If you do feel like a fancy drink, opt for the veggie Bloody Mary, which uses tomato juice rather than a sugary fruit juice.
