5 ways to treat yourself

Here’s how to take a time out and celebrate the little things in life – because you deserve it!

We women have become masters at juggling all the responsibilities and pressures of our day-to-day lives, whether that’s meeting the needs of our families, our jobs or our friends. After taking care of everyone else, however, we often find we’re at the last spot on our list of priorities.

It’s vital to take time out for ourselves and celebrate the ‘wins’ every day – no matter how small they may be! Even as life gets busy, it’s important to celebrate who you are and honour the efforts and triumphs of each day.

So, in the spirit of celebrating yourself and finding the joyful moments in life, here are five small ways you can treat yourself when the going gets tough:

Get the girls together

Call up your closest girlfriends, grab a great bottle of wine and let the sharing begin! There’s nothing quite like a chat with your pals to help you leave the stress of the day behind you, and get a smile on your face.

Let go of the to-do list

Ruled by your to-do list? It might be time to learn the art of letting it go – at least for a little while! Have some fun and reconnect with the carefree you. Spend a day where you embrace the unexpected, or try opening yourself up to something new.

Hug yourself!

When things get stressful, it helps to take a quick moment to breathe and give yourself a literal hug. Bend your knees, bring them to your chest and hug them close to your body with your arms. Hold the pose for 20 to 50 seconds, then release and repeat. This stretch hits all the muscles in your body— and it feels great.

Do something for others

Paying it forward can do wonders for your own sense of happiness, and it doesn’t have to be a financial contribution, either. You can donate your time to a local charity, or gather up the clothing you no longer need or wear and drop it off at Dress for Success – there are plenty of ways to get involved.

Book yourself in for something fun

We all need something to look forward to, whether that’s a dream overseas holiday or a weekend away outside the city. It could be a dinner at that restaurant you’ve been wanting to try, or a spa day with the girls – whatever you decide, it helps to have something real booked in and waiting for you.
