One of the best parts of a Kiwi summer is heading to the beach for a dip, and done properly, it’s a superb exercise that works all of your major muscle groups. Here are some great reasons to brush up on your technique.
No stress
Swimming is great for anyone – even if you have injuries, excess weight or are getting on in years. Not only does the water hold you up, but it also acts as a cushion to your movements, making you less likely to strain or damage muscles.
Great exercise
Water works as resistance against your muscles, making you work harder to move through it. It also works the full body, stretching out arms and legs and working your core to keep you stable.
Keeping calm
Moving water, like the ocean, contains negative ions that make us feel more positive and relaxed. Being underwater and concentrating on your breathing and movements forces you to concentrate on the task at hand and helps quiet that inner chatter – making it almost a meditative movement.
