Add a stylish flourish with five Simply You-approved ways to tie a scarf, preferably paired with sunnies.

The monarch. For those who like to make their own fashion rules, tying your scarf to the side and pairing it with bold accessories will have you looking like the queen of cool. To reign over the compliments, team a ruby red scarf, such as this silk twill one from Bess, with round Gucci sunnies and pull the look together with luxuriously long earrings. Gucci sunglasses, $650, from Parker & Co. Earrings, $39, by Ruby. Scarf, $240, by Bess.

The artist. While what’s printed on a scarf is pretty in itself, the true beauty of the garment is when you artistically wrap it so the colours create a new design of their own, with the original image kept a stylish secret for the wearer. In this instance, a watercolour Deadly Ponies scarf has been loosely draped around the neck with two ends tied in simple knots to give the pastel pattern a little edge. Fendi sunglasses, $645, from Sunglass Bar. Earrings, $39, by Ruby. Scarf, $230, by Deadly Ponies.

The lover. Skinny neckties need only to be tied simply to make the most impact – just add novelty, heart-shaped sunnies to position yourself as more hot date, less air hostess. St Laurent sunglasses, $695, from Parker & Co. Scarf, $230, by Deadly Ponies.

The star. Scarves have never been made for the fainthearted, and we couldn’t be more delighted with this new tying technique which adds a little more volume to the classic scarf. Simply wrap it around your neck and tuck the ends under the top layer to turn heads. Sunglasses, $349, by Karen Walker. Earrings, $69, by Gorman. Scarf, $230, by Deadly Ponies.

The wild card. It can’t get more 1970s than a muted cream and brown palette and a pussy-bow neck detail. Add a side of faux fur for a witty take on retro inspiration. St Laurent sunglasses, $595, from Parker & Co. Scarf, $230, by Deadly Ponies.
