The biggest trends at Australian Fashion Week

Our edit of the runway trends to take note of from Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Australia.

From Dion Lee’s spectacular opening show outside the sails of the Sydney Opera House it was clear that this year’s Fashion Week would be full of strong, primary colours and easy glamour.

Red, blue and white are the colours of the moment, full of vitality and a statement all on their own. Likewise, shimmering golds and glitter scattered about the runways add playfulness to nighttime looks.

On the flip side, smart takes on suiting, that were more about an easy flow than sharp tailoring, and a new, softer take on the trench coat, combined with a lack of high high-heels on the runway has us looking forward to a more leisurely attire.

If you’ve bought into it recently you’ll be pleased to know that the off-the-shoulder trend is still very popular, a flattering cut for every body shape it’s no surprise this has been updated with sensual dresses and contemporary designs.

Also of note are the see-through fabrics of mesh and tulle that hint at recycled materials now that sustainable fashion is a huge talking point for the industry.

And spots – a new season would not be complete without us hailing in the new spot or stripe. This time round spots both big and small come in fresh white or complementary, not contrasting, colours.

These shows really did have something for everyone, and with the likes of Sass & Bide making their collections available to shop immediately after the runway, we don’t have to wait half a year to see these trends come into full effect.
