Protecting skin from sun damage also helps us guard against skin cancer. Many of us once baked away without fear of repercussions, but thanks to sun-safe campaigns we now know to slather sunblock all over ourselves before venturing outside.
SAVE YOUR SKIN
Sunblocks used to be mainly SPF15, or at the most SPF30, but nowadays there are some as strong as SPF100 – at which point they’re providing serious protection.
If you spend a lot of time at the beach or in the pool, make sure you use a water-proof or water-resistant sunscreen. Not only will this ensure you are protected against the sun, you also won’t need to constantly reapply it.
LIP SERVICE
Lips can become particularly dry when exposed to the elements, and sometimes lip balms are just not enough. Make sure your lip balm contains an SPF rating, as the skin on lips is particularly sensitive to sun exposure.
AFTER SUN FUN
Even with the best protection, skin can still feel dry after time in the sun. Apply after-sun lotions liberally
- especially to elbows and knees, which are prone to extra drying.
If you’ve been in the sun just a little too long, an aloe-based after sun gel will soothe, nourish and replenish your poor red skin. Aloe vera has always been used for treating burns and has a wonderful cooling effect.
FAKING IT
Some of us shouldn’t – or can’t – expose ourselves to lots of sun. Maybe you’ve had a skin-cancer scare or you’re simply too busy, but you can still achieve a natural sun-kissed look with the new generation of self-bronzers. Twenty years ago, these products smelled vile and looked like heavy brown paint once applied, but how times have changed!
Cover yourself from top to toe using your palms to help spread the product evenly, then, when you want to, you can simply wash it off again.
CROWNING GLORY
Unless you religiously wear hats, the first part of the body the sun’s rays will reach is your hair, but a little forethought can help save your locks from becoming tired, dry and frizzy during summer. Use products especially formulated to restore moisture to the hair after sun-exposre, such as protective creams and anti-damage conditioners.
