Quick-fix makeup tips

How to do your own flattering, fuss-free makeup in next to no time.

Five minutes is all it takes to give yourself a basic makeup look that’ll take you to work and beyond with just a couple of touch-ups. The golden rule is if you’re in a rush then keep it simple, but if you have a few extra moments add the extra steps that’ll help your makeup last even longer.

Bases

These should multi-task. Use a light fluid that also offers skincare benefits.

Concealers

These work hard, covering dark circles as well as pigmentation, redness and blemishes.

**Powders

**Keep these subtle. Only powder the very high-shine areas such as your T-zone, as powder on the cheeks is an instant ager. Go for something sheer that leaves a natural finish.

**Blusher

**This is an essential, so don’t be tempted to skip. For a speedy application, add a sheer layer of cream blush with your fingers.

Eyes

Use a single wash of eyeshadow colour from your palette. Go for the lighter shade first and if there’s time add definition with the darker colour.

Lips

These need sheen and colour.

Finally… Comb your eyebrows into place and set with a little skin balm

With any spare minutes: Use a skin primer before your foundation. It evens skin tone, neutralises redness and brightens dull skin – providing an ideal canvas for foundation.

My beauty philosophy is… Be yourself! Do you really want to be mistaken for another girl? Sometimes people think I’m that lady from Marae DIY or the one from Pukana, when really I’m that

new funny-dancing one from Kanikani Mai. But it’s all good.

The skincare products I can’t live without are… Frangipani oil/moisturiser from the Pacific Islands or the markets in Auckland. Every time I put it on it makes me feel nice and fresh. The aroma seems to help clear my hay fever too – maybe it’s a secret remedy from my Cook Islands-side.

My haircare secret is… Work it to your environment. Being a working mama of two, I know how it is when you feel like you’re wrestling the mane of a lion. Thank goodness a loose topknot is acceptable these days. It’s quite good at the end of the day, too, because when I let it out my hair’s full and bouncy and looks like I went to the hairdresser.

The must-have products in my makeup bag are… Phoenix Super Activ Liquid Foundation, Phoenix Buffer Brush, brow powder and lipsticks and glosses. I’m a serious fan of the brand’s creator Phoenix Renata and her team of Pink Ladies. Any time I can support a Maori business and feel good at the same time is awesome!

My favourite beauty treat is… Cocktail hour. I feel great sitting there with my makeup and bouncy hair, and the next day when I look at myself in the mirror, I know I have all these products waiting to help me get back to awesome.

My biggest beauty sin is… Pulling off lash extensions. It’s hideous, but I can’t help it.

The best thing my mother taught me about beauty was… Don’t shave your legs. Sadly, I didn’t listen to her and shaved them when I was about 12. Like most ladies, I now have the time-consuming task of keeping up with the Kardashians and all that hair-removal hideousness for the sake of not stabbing anyone with regrowth.
