Everybody needs to look after their hair, so we asked leading Auckland trichologist Nigel Russell for advice. He’s an expert at knowing what’s causing our hair and scalp problems. He’s also a senior stylist and tutor at Servilles and the creator of the Holistic Hair brand.
Problem: Tired-looking next-day hair
Causes:Most often this is due to product build-up and the general effect of day-to-day routine and environmental influences such as pollution. Constant reapplication of hairspray will flatten the look and make hair hard to style.
Cure:There are now products that claim to “plump up” hair the day after it’s washed and bring it back to life without the need to shampoo it again. Hair dusts are ideal for reinventing your hairstyle the next day or even during the day if it starts to look flat. Just a light sprinkle along the hairline and around the crown gently worked into the roots will give you volume and lift.
Problem: Dull hair
Causes: Usually product build-up or layering styling products leads to dullness. Also, faded colour will make hair look flat, as will chemically straightening it too often. Health problems can also contribute – when you have a cold your hair appears lifeless and low iron can also make hair brittle.
Cure: Correct use and selection of haircare is important. Try water-soluble styling products and pick the right shampoo. Also, ensure your hair isn’t being over-coloured, as this creates flatness and can make the hair appear ashy. Eat healthily and avoid fad dieting or skipping meals.
Problem: Frizz and flyaways
Causes: Generally this problem relates to curly hair, as the cuticle doesn’t lie flat. Continual chemical processing will also weaken hair, causing frizz and flyaways. Constant ironing and over-drying will encourage static in hair too.
Cure: Ensure you use good leave-in products and a weekly mask to coat the cuticle and smooth it down. Before drying, use a hair oil or elixir. Take a few days off from the irons and blow-dryer and tie hair up with a little care product in it.
