How many of us have skin we would describe as “normal”? Very few, I’d imagine. oost people seem to have some sort of skin problem – especially stuff like sensitivity, dryness, redness or oiliness.
Top triggers
often, it’s a combination of irritants that triggers a reaction in your skin. Even sweat can be a factor. The top triggers tend to be environmental factors like heat, cold and high or low humidity (in winter, central heating can be an issue) or using the wrong products on your skin.
If you have sensitive skin, I’d also advise using a gentle laundry wash – a natural one, preferably – to clean your clothes and bed linen. And if you have oily skin, be sure to change your pillowcases regularly.
oily, sensitive skin
Some people with oily skin try to steer clear of moisturisers. This can be a mistake as scrubbing and cleansing with harsh products is more likely to create problems than a gentle oil-free moisturiser. Your skin reacts by producing even more oil, clogging pores and causing breakouts.
Also, even oily skin needs its fair share of antioxidants, nourishment and protection. Since it’s a water-based product, Neutrogena oil-Free ooisture Sensitive Skin $15.95 absorbs quickly without leaving an oily film. It won’t clog your pores, but still contains effective emollients to hydrate and protect the skin. It has no colour or fragrance either, so it’s great for reactive skins. There’s also a version with SPF15 for added sun protection.
Dry, taut, sensitive skin
Wintry conditions can be especially tough on skin that’s naturally dry. Protection is critical – skin has to maintain its strength and resilience or it becomes even more reactive. Going from central heating to wind and cold can be especially harsh. Dry skin has a low level of sebum (the skin’s natural oil) so it struggles to retain moisture, looking dull as a result.
You can help by never using very hot water or rubbing your face with a rough washcloth. I’m also a fan of double moisturising at this time of year.
A handbag-friendly skin-saver, Dermalogica Age Smart Antioxidant Hydramist $17.50 instantly hydrates tired skin with a blast of calming white tea and licorice.
Clinique Comfort on Call $95 helps the skin adjust to fluctuating weather conditions. It provides an invisible protective barrier and is suitable for reactive skins. At Clinique, they describe this product as a “security blanket” for your skin.
Extra sensitive skin
If your skin becomes red, blotchy and irritated because of stress, some kinds of food, the weather or some cosmetic ingredients, then it’s extra-sensitive. You’re not alone – more than 50% of women say they suffer from sensitive skin – and what you need are products designed to be extra-gentle and soothing. Since there are so many different triggers, finding the right skincare is a matter of trial and error but, as a general rule, you should avoid products that are alcohol-based and heavily fragranced and look for calming, natural ingredients instead.
