At 61, The Block Australia judge Shaynna Blaze is busier than ever. As well as appearing on her 15th series of the reality reno show, she’s been presenting Aussie travel series Getaway and has a new “interiors-related” show in development, plus she’s released music, including the EP Sweeter Than Me, which came out in November.
So how does she feel? “Fabulous,” she replies. “I feel like I’m 36. Physically, I’m so well and, professionally and personally, I have to say I’m in such a beautiful space.”
But Shaynna hasn’t always felt so fab. When she started writing her single Warrior in 2019, it was a challenging time.
“There were just lots of things happening in my life where I had to squash my voice and that comes with its own repercussions. Then COVID hit and we were all squashed in our houses… I had to really dig deep.”
In the past five years, Shaynna has gone through a lot of growth. She explains, “In your fifties, you think, ‘Oh, you can’t ever start again,’ but I feel like I’ve set that reset button. I feel just as motivated as I was in my mid-thirties to hit goals and have a good life.”
Shaynna has no desire to retire from The Block.
“They’ll have to get rid of me – I won’t give up on The Block!” she insists, despite the “argy-bargy” between her and the show’s newest judge, real estate owner Marty Fox, 38.
“Honestly, you lock horns as professionals, then you walk out, you look at each other and go, ‘Well, that was interesting, wasn’t it?’ But no, everything’s fine.”
Where Shaynna draws the line is with internet trolls trying to shame her.
“I’m on a TV show where I’m a judge, but I’m judging work,” she says. “But what happens is that people judge me as a person constantly. If you don’t agree with what I’m wearing, how I look or how I go about my daily life, it’s not up for your daily debate.”
Looking ahead, Shaynna feels positive about the future.
“I could just be a little bit dangerous in the next five years,” she laughs. “Don’t try to stop me!”
