The second season of My Kitchen Rules New Zealand got off to a flying start last night with contestants Hannah and Cathy earning themselves an “unprecedented” 81 out of 100 in the first instant restaurant of the competition.
Judges Gareth Stewart and Ben Bayly praised their menu, which was complete with a carpaccio entrée, a lamb and risotto main and chocolate tart dessert, for its delicious flavours and top-notch technique.
“We’re pretty proud,” laughs Cathy, who along with teammate Hannah rehabilitates high-risk offenders at Spring Hill Correctional Facility. “To hear that it was ‘unprecedented’ in MKR history was really amazing. But now there’s a lot of pressure to continue to deliver at a high standard.”
MKR Australia judge Pete Evans also made a surprise appearance last night, stopping in to offer some words of encouragement to the girls and their star-struck guests.
“I was gobsmacked to see Pete at the front door. I was so excited and couldn’t believe he was here at our instant restaurant!! It is a shame that he left so quickly. It would have been great to have him for dinner and be a judge for the night. It was definitely an unforgettable moment!” says Cathy.
Tonight, the teams will travel to New Plymouth where former Hurricanes star Laurence and artist Paul will host the second instant restaurant of the series.
My Kitchen Rules NZ returns tonight at 7.30pm on TV2.
