When a video surfaces of Sydney sisters Maddy and Charlotte Harry showing they’d renovated other houses before their appearance on The Block, their competitors feel betrayed.
“The girls flat-out lied,” fumes Melbourne IT worker Haydn Wise, 37. “They told us they were accountants – they didn’t mention they’d flipped houses! They asked for advice on how to do things within a build, yet they obviously knew it all.”
Having recently moved to Phillip Island with her newborn daughter Matilda, Haydn’s wife Chelsea has formed a close friendship with Kylie Baker, who recruited her new pal to dig some dirt on Maddy, 25, and Charlotte, 22.
Laughs Haydn, “Chelsea loves to get involved – that’s her character. She discovered the video on Google in just five minutes.”
Haydn’s plumber bestie Ricky Recard, 34, thinks the footage proves the sisters have an unfair advantage.
He says, “Me and H have never flipped a house together. It takes weeks to get to know each other’s strengths when it comes to renovating.”
But Maddy and Charlotte insist they misled no one and are “not liars”.
Maddy says, “Mimi [Belperio] had heard rumours from the builders that we had experience and we were honest. We told her our story of renovating houses – we never lied. If the others had asked about our experience, we would have shared it, but they never did. It’s not on us to tell them the nitty-gritty.”
The siblings felt uneasy when Haydn first mentioned the footage. Tells Maddy, “Haydn came up to us and we asked if he’d had a late night. He said, ‘Actually, I’ve been watching you at work in the video since 4am.’ That made me feel so uncomfortable.”
And things only get worse for the sisters when Kylie catches Charlotte taking a sneaky walk-through of their competitors’ bathrooms while everyone’s out for dinner – a move Kylie calls “immature” and “suspicious”, leaving the sibling to feel even more on the outer.
“The other contestants have dinners without us and hang out in each other’s houses – we can hear them,” says Charlotte.
Maddy adds, “It makes us really upset. I don’t know how to exist in the same space as people who clearly don’t want us there.”
