What is your favourite way to celebrate Matariki?

Spending time with my whānau! I love being surrounded by my tuakana [older siblings and cousins], just enjoying each other’s company. I’m big on family and this holiday is another reason to celebrate why I’m proud to be Māori. Our culture is so rich with stories and teachings. I always learn more each year and I’m excited to celebrate again this year. Mauri ora!

What are you most looking forward to while hosting Stars Of Matariki?

The talent, darling! I always like to say that us Māori are the most talented in Aotearoa. I’m being biased and I don’t care – we are! I’m so thrilled to be surrounded by so many talented Kiwis. Māori or not, our small nation has so much talent to offer and it’s so cool that we get to do it through waiata. These performers are all incredible and I’m excited for them to bring the heat!

Which artist are you looking forward to seeing perform?

Paige! She seems like a really cool, down-to-earth chick. I ran into her once and she was so humble. She’s a great lyricist and I’m excited to see if she debuts any new music. Oh, and of course Uncle Stan [Walker]!

You’re a singer yourself. What do you love most about performing?

There is no other feeling. It’s almost indescribable. I have always said that I articulate better through waiata than speaking. I’ve grown up surrounded by beautiful performers. Singing is something I hold very close to my heart. It’s expressing myself on a whole other level. I regret not singing more often sometimes, but here’s to new chapters!

What’s one of your favourite childhood family memories?

My family was big on celebrating Christmas and we would have to perform a talent show in front of the entire family. Of course, I had to sing! My parents had the idea of being my back-up dancers – neither of them can actually dance. I sang I Saw Mummy Kissing Santa Claus and all of a sudden, everyone was laughing instead of listening to me. I turned around and, lo and behold, Mummy was actually kissing Santa Claus! Yuck! I stormed off crying and the show did not go on.

Favourite thing to do when you need a pick-me-up?

Meditate. Sounds clichéd and so 2023, but meditating has helped my brain feel less like it’s going to explode. It has helped me be more in touch with myself. It’s also far cheaper than therapy, especially in this economy. Better living, everyone!

What’s next career-wise for you?

Just to win an Emmy, Grammy and Oscar. Nothing major! See you on the big screen, kids.
