Where will Queen Elizabeth II be buried?

Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II’s funeral took place this morning at Westminster Abbey, and after that she will be honoured by her family with a private burial service.

Queen Elizabeth II’s state funeral was the first since Sir Winston Churchill’s funeral in 1965. Both Diana, The Princess of Wales and Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother had funeral services at Westminster Abbey that shared similar characteristics to a state funeral, but were not official state funerals.

After her state funeral at Westminster Abbey, there was a committal ceremony for Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II at St George’s Chapel in Windsor. The private service followed where she will be buried alongside Prince Philip and her parents in the King George VI Memorial Chapel in St George’s Chapel at Windsor Castle.

The memorial chapel was commissioned by the Queen in 1962 as a burial place for her father. King George VI died in 1952 and was interred in the chapel after its completion in 1969.

In 2002 King George’s youngest daughter and the Queen’s sister Princess Margaret’s ashes were placed in the royal vault, she was the first royal to be cremated since Princess Louise in 1939. She was cremated to ensure that her remains would be accommodated in the small chapel.

King George’s widow The Queen Mother was interred in the chapel on 9 April 2002 following her funeral at Westminster Abbey. Princess Margaret’s ashes were placed in her parents’ tomb at the same time.

Queen Elizabeth II was buried in the chapel following her state funeral at Westminster Abbey, her consort Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh was be interred in the chapel at the same time.

The Duke of Edinburgh died on 9 April 2021 and his remains have been held in the royal vault of St George’s Chapel since his funeral in 2021.
