Who ranks where in the Bank of Windsor

Prince William, King Charles and Harry and Meghan edited side-by-side

Financial experts in the UK have delved into which of the royals are likely the richest and ranked them accordingly.

Prince William

$2.29 billion

The heir to the throne is the richest royal, thanks to being the beneficiary of the Duchy of Cornwall. William, 42, inherited the duchy – a massive estate that includes land, property and investments – from his father when his grandmother, Queen Elizabeth II, died in 2022, and he became Prince of Wales. Established in 1337, the duchy is worth more than $2 billion and provides an annual income of around $52.5 million. Wills was already doing okay financially – he inherited around $21 million from his mother, Princess Diana, and $15 million from his great-grandmother, the Queen Mother.

King Charles

$1.9 billion

Charles III is not far behind his eldest son when it comes to money. As monarch, he receives the income from the Duchy of Lancaster. Smaller than the Duchy of Cornwall, it’s worth about $1.3 billion but generates more money – around $59 million a year. However, the King, 76, doesn’t get to keep that all to himself – much of it goes into the Privy Purse and is used for both official and private expenditures, including paying for the expenses of other members of the family. Experts believe Charles inherited the bulk of his mother’s personal fortune, estimated at around $700 million.

Princess Anne

$109 million

There’s a significant drop to the next wealthiest royal, with the King’s sister having just a fraction of his fortune. Experts understand that she inherited money from her mother, although they have never disclosed the amount. As a working royal, the Sovereign Grant pays her. A large part of her wealth comes from her home, Gatcombe Park, which the Queen gave Anne, 74, and her then-husband Mark Phillips in 1976. After they divorced, they split the 295-hectare estate, but Anne makes a decent income from her share via farming and hosting equestrian events.

Prince Harry & Meghan, Duchess of Sussex

$105 million

Much has been made of the multimillion- dollar deals Harry, 40, and Meghan, 43, have signed with the likes of Netflix and Spotify. However, they haven’t received all the $240 million fees they allegedly negotiated because they haven’t produced all the content. But the money from the entertainment industry has been crucial since they stopped getting payouts from the Crown after leaving their roles as senior working royals. Harry’s bestselling memoir Spare, also bolstered their income, speaking engagements that can pay up to $1.8 million a pop and his inheritance from his mother ($21 million) and great-grandmother ($15 million).

Prince Michael of Kent

$68.8 million

The Queen’s cousin has done well for himself despite not being subsidised by the Sovereign Grant – he’s never been a full-time working royal. Michael, 82, forged a career as a business consultant after spending 20 years in the military. His company, Cantium Services, works in property, education and technology. His wife, Princess Michael, 78, is estimated to have amassed more than $10 million as an interior designer, author and public speaker.

David Armstrong-Jones, Earl of Snowdon

$43-$65 million

It’s unclear exactly how much the King’s cousin is worth, but some estimates say $65 million. Most of that came as an inheritance from his mother, Princess Margaret, who had already given David, 63, and his sister, Lady Sarah Chatto some of her assets before she died in 2002. David got her holiday home on the Caribbean island of Mustique, which he sold for $5 million in 1999.
