SEPTEMBER 8, 2022

Her Majesty passed away at Balmoral Castle, in Scotland, aged 96.

SEPTEMBER 9, 2022

His Majesty, Charles III, gave his first address as King. He paid tribute to Elizabeth II both as Monarch and his mother. He also announced that his son Prince William and daughter-in-law Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge, would become Prince and Princess of Wales.

SEPTEMBER 10, 2022

Charles was officially proclaimed King by the Privy Council in a ceremony called the Accession Council at St James’s Palace.

SEPTEMBER 11-18, 2022

Mourning for the Queen included members of her family standing vigil around her coffin in Edinburgh and London. The King and his wife Camilla greeted crowds at events in the four countries of the UK – England, Scotland, Northern Ireland and Wales.

SEPTEMBER 19, 2022

Elizabeth II’s funeral was held at Westminster Abbey. Her coffin was then taken to St George’s Chapel, Windsor Castle, where she was laid to rest alongside her husband, Prince Philip, who died 17 months earlier, and her parents George VI and the Queen Mother.

DECEMBER 11, 2022

Charles and Camilla released their first Christmas card as King and Queen. It featured a photograph that had been taken at the Braemar Games in Scotland, five days before the Queen died.

DECEMBER 25, 2022

Charles delivered his first Christmas message as King. In the pre-recorded broadcast, he thanked the public for their support and mentioned his grief over the loss of both his parents. On Christmas Day, he led the royals’ walk to St Mary Magdalene Church from Sandringham for the Christmas service.

MARCH 10, 2023

The King gave his brother Prince Edward the title Duke of Edinburgh – last used by his father Prince Philip – on his 59th birthday. Edward’s wife Sophie, Countess of Wessex, became the Duchess of Edinburgh.

MARCH 29-31, 2023

The King and Queen went on their first overseas state visit, spending three days in Germany.

APRIL 4, 2023

Buckingham Palace released a new photo of Charles and Camilla ahead of the coronation, along with the official invitation which confirmed that Charles’ wife would be known as Queen Camilla after the ceremony, rather than Queen Consort.

MAY 6, 2023

The King’s coronation was held at Westminster Abbey. Aged 74, he became the oldest person to be crowned as Britain’s Monarch by the Archbishop of Canterbury in a traditional ceremony held in front of 2200 guests. Camilla was also crowned.

JULY 5, 2023

A dedication and thanksgiving service held in Edinburgh celebrated the King’s coronation. After a procession through the streets, he was handed the Honours of Scotland – or Scottish regalia – to mark his accession to the throne.
