The happy news has been confirmed by the press office of the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, which has released an official statement with more details about the new royal baby.

“Their Royal Highnesses The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge are very pleased to announce that The Duchess of Cambridge is expecting their second child,” the statement read.

“The Queen and members of both families are delighted with the news.

“As with her first pregnancy, The Duchess is suffering from Hyperemesis Gravidarum. Her Royal Highness will no longer accompany The Duke of Cambridge on their planned engagement in Oxford today,” the statement continued.

“The Duchess of Cambridge is being treated by doctors at Kensington Palace.”

Hyperemesis Gravidarum is a condition that causes severe morning sickness, and it means Catherine’s upcoming royal engagements – such as her first solo tour to Malta – may be in doubt. For all future events, Kensington Palace has said Catherine’s attendance will be decided “case by case”.

Nevertheless, it’s very welcome news for the couple, who have made no secret of their desire for a family.

During his official visit to Oxford yesterday (a trip that Catherine had to pull out of due to her condition), Prince William said they were “immensely thrilled”.

Congratulations to the happy parents! We can’t wait to see Prince George’s new brother or sister.
