In a statement today to People Magazine, his family shared,  “He spent his final days surrounded by dear friends, his devoted wife, and his two beautiful daughters, Billie and Georgia, who were the center of his world.”

“Throughout his journey with ALS, Eric became a passionate advocate for awareness and research, determined to make a difference for others facing the same fight. He will be deeply missed, and lovingly remembered always. Eric adored his fans and is forever grateful for the outpouring of love and support he’s received. The family has asked for privacy as they navigate this impossible time.”

Best known for his role as Dr Mark Sloan or “McSteamy”, his character was killed off in 2012. Initially, his character was only meant to be a guest role – his first official appearance as a series regular was on the 10th of February, 2026 – and in a sad coincidence, Dane passed away on the 20th anniversary of that episode.

Dane married actress Rebecca Gayheart in 2004 and welcomed their daughters Billie and Georgia in 2010 and 2011.. His wife filed for divorce in 2018, citing “irreconcilable differences”, but in March of 2024, she reportedly filed a dismissal of the divorce petition.

After being diagnosed less than a year ago with ALS, Dane has shared his journey, bringing awareness to the disease, which still has no cure.
