Charmian Carr, who played the eldest von Trapp daughter in The Sound of Music has died at the age of 73.
Charmian, who played Liesl in the classic film, died following complications associated with a rare form of dementia, from which she was suffering.
Her Sound of Music co-star Kym Karath, who played youngest child Gretl in the movie, paid tribute to her friend and fellow actress on Twitter.
“It is with infinite sadness that I share the tragic news that the precious & exquisite Charmian Carr, beautiful Liesl, has passed away.”
Kym also shared a snap of the two from recent years, which she captioned: “One of Charmian’s many happy times together. She has been like a sister throughout my life. Excruciating.”
Charmian remained close with many of her co-stars, with Kym sharing several snaps of them catching up over the years to her Twitter page.
But Kym and Charmian seemed to share an especially close bond, often attending events and functions together.
After The Sound of Music, Charmian went onto star in Evening Primrose before retiring from the showbiz industry and opening her own interior design firm. Her clients included Michael Jackson, plus her other sound of Music co-stars.
She has no formal vocal or acting training before auditioning for The Sound of Music, which she only did so on the advice of her mother.
Her death caused an outpouring of grief on social media, with many paying tribute to the actress, and posting her infamous “16 going on 17” song scene.
