In 2012, Malala made headlines around the world when she was shot on her school bus in Pakistan. Targeted because of her support for female education, Malala’s story immediately triggered a wave of public support for her cause.

Today, Malala lives in the UK with her family, where she continues to study and campaign for women’s rights and education. She was named one of Time‘s most influential people in 2013, and on October 10 this year, Malala was announced as the recipient of the Nobel Peace Prize – making her one of the youngest winners ever.

Reese spoke about Malala’s incredible story at the Variety Power of Women luncheon, where she was being recognised for her own work with Malala’s official organisation the Malala Fund.

“Ava [Reese’s 15-year-old daughter] was the first person who told me about Malala, about how violently she was treated, how great that she recovered and how extraordinarily she stood up within her country against an entire culture of oppression,” Reese said.

“Her courage and her vision is a true inspiration. She is my role model.”
