Meryl Streep’s anti-Trump speech at the recent Golden Globes earned her a place in Donald Trump’s bad books (and Twitter feed) – yet she is far from the first celeb to use her speech to promote a cause.

Many an A-lister has gotten political, emotional or otherwise controversial while accepting their gold statues.

At the 2000 Oscars, Angelina Jolie declared that she is was in love with her brother, while accepting her Best Supporting Actress gong for Girl Interrupted.

In 2012, Adrien Brody was so excited to win Best Actor for his role in The Pianist that he surprised presenter Halle Berry with an extended kiss on-stage.

And in 1973 Marlon Brando famously sent a Native American Apache woman, Sacheen Littlefeather, to decline his Best Actor Academy Award for The Godfather in protest of the film industry’s treatment of Native American people.

And while most Oscar winners tend to run over their allotted time, Joe Pesci stunned with his Oscar win for Best Supporting Actor in 1991 when he spoke just five words: “It’s my privilege. Thank you.”

Oscar speeches have long since departed from being a simple thank you. They are now a platform from which to promote a cause, make a scene or prove you are important enough to keep talking even as you are being ushered off stage. Yet as the years go by and the Hollywood ego becomes more infamous, the stars keep finding new ways to shock us all.

The real question is – who’s next?
