While the awards ceremony has been the celebrity outing of choice for some truly avant garde looks over the years, the VMAs also give our favourite stars an opportunity to have fun with their fashion and shake it up.

Keep scrolling below to see who we thought had the Best and Worst looks at this year’s MTV Video Music Awards.

Yara Shahidi

BEST – Yara Shahidi: The Black-ish star looked elegantly timeless in this Grecian-inspired gown, and the striking colour ensured she turned plenty of heads at the event.

Lorde

BEST – Lorde: The Kiwi songstress had a total princess moment, and rightfully so, in this lilac feathered dream of a gown.

Katy Perry

BEST – Katy Perry: The host of the evening glammed it up for her red carpet look in this sleek one-shouldered white gown.

Pink

BEST – Pink: The singer and mum-of-two nailed it in the fashion stakes, looking perfectly put together in this crisp suit. Plus, she had the cutest dates on her arms for the ceremony – hubby Carey Hart and daughter Willow, all dressed to match!

Millie Bobby Brown

BEST – Millie Bobby Brown: The Stranger Things breakout star continues to showcase a preternatural sense of style savvy, and her utterly cool dress and boots combo at the VMAs was yet another great look from the young actress.

Jared Leto

WORST – Jared Leto: The actor’s vibrantly sequinned robe clashed with his long-sleeved pink shirt.

Demi Lovato

WORST – Demi Lovato: Demi’s sparkling harem pants were an odd choice for the singer, and the ensemble as a whole wasn’t the most flattering.

Vanessa Hudgens

WORST – Vanessa Hudgens: The actress and singer’s crimson gown definitely caught our attention, but for all the wrong reasons, with a see-through window on the skirt adding a bizarre touch to what would otherwise have been a slam dunk.

Heidi

WORST – Heidi Klum: The model’s fit and fab figure is certainly showcased in this clinging number, but the uninspired colour and abundance of extra embellishments make this a miss.

Paris Jackson

WORST – Paris Jackson: While the details on this Dior gown are beautiful, the sheer element feels a little bit over-done.
