THE campaign to get Leonardo di Caprio an Oscar is in full swing after the actor’s gracious speech at the Golden Globes award – not to mention his hilarious reaction to being bumped by Lady Gaga as she made her way up to the stage.
Leonardo di Caprio won the Golden Globe for his performance as a 19th century trapper mauled by a bear in The Revenant but it was his speech, honoring First Peoples around the world, that captured hearts in the room.
Then came the moment that Lady Gaga, full of pride after winning a prize for her performance in a TV show, swept by Leo, bumping him on her way to the stage.
His reaction – a good natured eyebrow raise – was trending on social media all night.
Leo was also caught in a warm embrace with Titanic star Kate Winslet, who won a Golden Globe for her performance in Steve Jobs.
It has been almost two decades since Kate and Leo made Titanic, and both actors have gone on to have stellar careers, but Leo has never won the Oscar, despite extraordinary performances in Gangs of New York, Django, The Aviator and The Great Gatsby.
He went all out in The Revenant, sleeping inside the carcass of a dead horse to warm himself during a blizzard, and eating a bison’s liver.
In his opening monologue, Golden Globes host Ricky Gervais reminded the stars not to take the Globes too seriously, but Lady Gaga couldn’t help herself, sashaying up to the stage, where she raved about how she had always wanted to be an actress.
“I’m truly speechless,” she said, although she very definitely wasn’t. She also thanked her co-stars for enabling her to “shine”.
In remarks after the awards, Leo said he meant no disrespect to the pop star, saying: “I just didn’t know what was passing me — that’s all.”
He used his speech to reach out to indigenous people around the world, saying: “I want to share this award with all the First Nations people represented in this film and all the Indigenous communities around the world. It is time that we heard your voices and protect this planet for future generations.”
