Kylie Jenner’s latest look is causing major controversy, after she stepped out at New York Fashion Week wearing a do-rag.
The hair accessory is traditionally associated with African-American culture, where it’s worn to protect one’s hairstyle.
“The durag has a special place in African-American and global black history as a head wrap,” said Vann Newkirk, writer and founder of #DuragHistoryWeek — a Twitter movement to celebrate the roots of the functional accessory.
Kylie wore the do-rag with embroidered denim cut-off shorts, a white crop top, oversized jewelled denim jacket and white lace-up boots.
This isn’t the first time the TV personality has faced criticism for wearing a do-rag.
Kylie was accused of cultural appropriation for the same thing, when she styled a Louis Vuitton scarf as a do-rag back in March for her music video.
Prior to this, Kylie caused a Twitter uproar in February when she sat front row at Alexander Wang’s runway show displaying a Yaki ponytail, made from African-American textured hair used primarily by black women to add extensions to their braids.
Last year, Kylie was criticised by Hunger Games actress Amandla Stenberg for sporting cornrows.
Amanda claimed that Kylie was again appropriating black culture with her hairstyle.
“When u appropriate black features and culture but fail to use ur position of power to help black Americans by directing attention towards ur wigs instead of police brutality or racism #whitegirlsdoitbetter,”tweeted Amanda.
The youngest member of the Kardashian/Jenner clan is not the only sister to be accused of cultural appropriation.
Khloe Kardashian was also recent accused of appropriating the traditionally Black hairstyle “Bantu Knots”, which she debuted on Instagram.
