He’s known as the hot-tempered builder from Tauranga who flies off the handle when things don’t go his way on The Block New Zealand: Girls vs Boys. But when it comes to talking about the lady in his life, Dylan Cossey couldn’t be further from the fiery guy we’ve seen on the TV3 show.
“I love everything about Jen. She’s gorgeous and bubbly, and she has a great smile and a great bottom!” gushes Dylan, who’s known to Block fans as Big Dyls. “She’s my princess and I’d do anything for her.”
The woman who turns the burly Kiwi bloke into a big softie is Jen Dennis. It was during his seven-year stint playing rugby in the UK that Dyls met the British beauty, who was also the former physiotherapist of his club Tonbridge Juddians, at a party.
Dyls recalls, “I laid eyes on her and fell in love! I said to one of the boys, ‘I’m going to marry that girl one day.’
Now 18 months later, we’re living in the Mount! I know I don’t come across as it – and I don’t look like it – but I am a bit of a romantic. I’m a Cancerian and I’m quite emotional. I definitely wear my heart on my sleeve.”
But it wasn’t the ripped sportsman, 28, who talked his lady love into packing up and moving halfway around the world – it was Jen who made the decision. Dyls tells, “I was going to take another rugby contract and Jen said she was thinking about coming to New Zealand. My ears pricked up. I wasn’t expecting that, so I said, ‘Yeah, let’s go home!’”
While their relationship has run smoothly, the same can’t be said for Dyls’ time on the hit DIY show. From bust-ups and tantrums, to breaking rules and getting into trouble, the temperamental gym junkie has had a rough time of it.
Jen, 29, says, “He’s struggling with the judges’ comments. I’ve had a few stressed-out phone calls from him. The producers tell him to ring me when he needs calming down! He is doing really well and I’m so proud of him.
“It’s funny. Everyone asks me about how he and Dylz are being portrayed on screen, and while the show plays up the drama, it’s a pretty real representation of them both. Dyls is an absolute clown, but he does take things to heart.”
Although Jen has come up to Auckland to visit Dyls on set a few times – with their pooch Hurley in tow – this is the longest time the loved-up couple have spent apart.
But they agree the separation will be worth it in the end. Jen smiles, “Dyls can be a little hot-headed, so I just say, ‘Remember why you’re doing the show. Keep your eyes on the prize.’”
The tattooed hunk adds, “Jen and my dog are the two driving forces for me to take out this competition. I would love to pop some sprogs and have the Kiwi dream. Jen knows I want to marry her – whether she’ll marry me or not is a different story!”
