The MTV Video Music Awards have often been a showcase for some of the most memorable red carpet looks over the years, for both good and bad reasons!

This year was certainly no different, as the stars took to the white carpet to show off their fashion-forward ensembles.

We’ve picked some of our hits and misses from the night here.

BEST: Hailee Steinfeld

The Pitch Perfect actress and singer showcased her endless pins in this funky multi-coloured Balmain mini-dress.

BEST: Stella Maxwell

The Victoria’s Secret stunner (who grew up in New Zealand) wowed in a matching crop top and pants from Moschino. While this look is undeniably loud, what better occasion to wear it for than at the VMAs?

BEST: Nicki Minaj

This daring navy blue Bao Tranchi number was an impeccable fit for Nicki and definitely made her stand out on the white carpet.

BEST: Heidi Klum

Heidi’s Roberto Cavalli dress fit the model and presenter like a glove – and she looks ready to party the night away!

BEST: Beyoncé

When you’re Beyoncé, there’s no way you’re ever ending up on a worst-dressed list. The singer strutted her stuff in this arresting Francesco Scognamiglio feathered dress before wowing everyone with a medley of songs on stage.

WORST: Farrah Abraham

One of the original stars of MTV’s Teen Mom series, Farrah Abraham certainly caught our attention with her Wonder Woman getup – but for all the wrong reasons!

WORST: Rita Ora

The singer was decked out head-to-toe in Marc Jacobs for the event, but we have to say this isn’t her best look. From the clunky shoes to the feather-trimmed hem of her transparent dress, it’s all too much for us.

WORST: Cassie

Looks like Cassie forgot to put on a shirt under that blazer! Either way, she’s definitely not one to forget on the white carpet this year, with her combination of shiny gold pants and highlighter-yellow hair.

WORST: Jaden Smith

Jaden Smith’s face says it all – we’re just as confused by his multi-patterned jacket and mesh top combo as he apparently is.

WORST: JWoww

Jersey Shore star Jenni ‘JWoww’ Farley debuted a new, more gothic-inspired look for the VMAs (pictured here with pal and co-star Nicole ‘Snooki’ Polizzi) but we have to say, we’re not sure it suits her.

UNDECIDED

Catfish: The TV Show producer Nev Shulman brought along his pregnant fiancee, Laura Perlongo, as his date. While we love that the couple chose matching looks for the occasion, we’re not sure about Laura’s decision to forgo a shirt! What do you think of this daring look?
