Amber Heard makes powerful speech about sexual assault

The actress fought back tears as she spoke out about sexual abuse and violence against women
Amber Heard

It’s been six months since Amber Heard filed for divorce from Johnny Depp (three months since the pair settled), and in a rare public appearance, the 30-year-old starlet has used her time in the spotlight to speak out against sexual abuse.

With fellow actresses Freida Pinto and Gabourey Sidibe by her side, the Aquaman head-liner took to the stage at Glamour’s Women of the Year Awards in LA to read the heartbreakingly powerful words of Emily Doe, the unnamed woman who was sexually assaulted by Stanford University student Brock Turner

During her emotional reading, the eclectic beauty stumbled on her tears, specifically as she recited Emily’s memory of when she found out she had been brutally raped.

Amber then skilfully picked herself up again, reading one of Emily’s last messages with power and strength.

“Finally, to girls everywhere – I am with you,” she read.

“On nights when you feel alone, I am with you.

“When people doubt you or dismiss you, I am with you.”

Gabourey, Freida and Amber deliver Emily Doe’s heartbreaking essay.

The three actresses were among a slew of celebrities who took out top gongs at Glamour’s Women of the Year awards.

Prior to Amber, Freida and Gabourey’s reading, Lena Dunham also took to the stage to express how deeply moved she was by Emily’s essay.

Amber’s attendance at the LA event comes after months of laying low following her highly publicised divorce from Johnny, 53.

Their headline-making split came to be following Amber filing for a domestic violence restraining order against her now-ex husband on April 27.

It is believed that Amber filed for divorce just three days after Johnny’s mother had died.

Amber dropped the charges against Johnny and donated her settlement to charity.
