Woman marries herself in $16,000 wedding ceremony

At least there's no need for a pre-nup.

An Italian woman has taken matters into her own hands – choosing to marry herself rather than wait for Mr or Miss Right to come along.

Her $16,000 wedding, which was attended by 70 guests, spared no detail – featuring a wedding party of four bridesmaids, a triple-tiered wedding cake (with a figurine of the bride on top) and of course a stunning, strapless white wedding dress… the only thing missing was a groom (or second bride).

The newlywed, 40-year-old fitness trainer Laura Mesi, even went on a honeymoon to Egypt – by herself.

Mesi organised the wedding after a long-term relationship ended two years ago. She had promised herself that if she did not have a boyfriend by the time she was 40, she would marry herself.

She told La Repubblica that in the ceremony she promised herself that she would “love me all my life.”

“Here is my fairy tale without a prince.”

Mesi is the latest in a growing number of men and women who are choosing to tie the knot with themselves. The self-marriage trend is known as sologamy.

A website called I Married Me reassures its visitors on its home page:

“You Are Reason To Celebrate.”

It continues, “Our I Married Me kit has all you need to create your own ceremony, including a self-wedding ring, vows and daily affirmation cards,” the reader is advised.

“A self-wedding is a symbolic ceremony–about reconnecting and staying connected with you. Wear the ring to remind you every day to LOVE YOURSELF. “

The website also sells self-wedding rings and explains the best way to go through with a ceremony.

The wedding has no religious or legal weight.
