Judy Blume opens up about breast cancer

Young adult fiction author Judy Blume (74) has undergone a double mastectomy. The author of popular teen books such are Are You There God? It’s Me, Margaret revealed when she received her diagnosis in June she did not get emotional.

“I choked up that first day, but the tears didn’t flow. This is neither good nor bad. It just surprised me, Instead, I sprang into action,” she wrote on her blog .

The author – whose book sales have grossed more than 100 million and have been translated into 31 languages – found comfort by researching her disease and talking to doctors and friends.

The popular author took charge of her health

“Taking charge (or thinking I was taking charge) made me feel better. What follows are some of the hardest decisions I’ve ever had to make.”

The author talked frankly about her decision to have a mastectomy, but couldn’t help making fun of herself – comparing herself to her famous Margaret character.

“I have small breasts (a la Margaret Simon). A-cups?… I’d become quite fond of them. Still, the idea of mastectomy wasn’t a difficult emotional decision for me (again, these are very personal reactions and decisions). Maybe because my breasts have never defined my sexuality. Who knows?”
