Rumours of an engagement have followed Jennifer Aniston and Justin Theroux for the past few months, so when questioned about the couple’s plans Jen’s father, John Aniston, played dumb to the media.
“It’s the first I’ve heard about it,” the 79-year-old Days of our Lives actor told gossip site Celebuzz. “It’s a surprise to me.”

Justin’s rep released a statement yesterday revealing details of the engagement. “Justin Theroux had an amazing birthday [on] Friday, receiving an extraordinary gift when his girlfriend, Jennifer Aniston, accepted his proposal of marriage.”
Although John claimed ignorance to the probing journalist, he was in fact aware that Justin had popped the question prior to the official announcement – but was wary of accidentally letting the cat out of the bag.

“[John] thought he was being trapped on the phone so played dumb to be safe,” Jennifer’s rep told Us Weekly.
Justin and Jennifer reportedly met while Justin was writing hit film Tropic Thunder, and friends say their relationship is based not only on chemistry but a strong friendship. The couple have been officially dating since June last year.
