Dame Maggie Smith has vowed to “stagger through” the final film in the Harry Potter series, in which she stars as Professor McGonagall. The acting legend was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2007 and is determined to beat the disease.
She says, “Cancer is hideous. It takes the wind out of your sails and puts your future in jeopardy. You feel so ghastly, you wouldn’t mind dying a lot of the time. But my energy is coming back now. The last few years have been a write-off but I’m beginning to feel like a person now.”
The chemotherapy left Maggie weak and ill, but she pulled through ‘Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince’ without showing any signs of deterioration. “I was hairless, but I had no problem with putting a wig on and getting on with my job.”
