Peta Mathias is an extremely bold girl who shows wanton disregard for authority, black clothes, comfortable shoes and boring people. The question is, why on earth has it taken so long for her to write a book decrying such scourges on the feminine landscape?
With Can We Help It If We’re Fabulous?, the popular New Zealand travel and food show host and author shares her thoughts on many things, from g-strings (a revolting cause of infection) to marriage (any single men out there know how to cook, clean and make cocktails?) to footwear (Peta’s shoes have sex in her suitcase and multiply all on their own).
I thought I would die laughing reading this book. In fact, my own personal cook/cleaner/cocktail-maker inquired after my wellbeing at one stage, such was the choking nature of my mirth, whereupon I was forced to share with him why such a consummate traveller as Peta never allows people to talk to her on planes. “The stories are always the same,” she says, “It’s usually a man (a compulsive sharer) and he has been undone by some slattern he was married to for 20 years. He never notices that you are either comatose with boredom or bleeding from the ears. I would prefer to travel by candlelit, horse-drawn carriage, with four young men to look after my womanly needs and another four to fold and iron my clothes by laying on them.”
You only need to look at the woman (red hair, bright clothes, killer heels) to know she has attitude. In fact, her own particular brand of wisdom and her unadulterated opinions on subjects like ageing, beauty, sex and love make this little pink book essential reading for every New Zealand woman of a certain age. And younger. If you are sick of the weather, hate your job/husband/accountant/wardrobe, think your ankles are too fat or find yourself constantly being drawn to the mirror to count your wrinkles, Can We Help It If We’re Fabulous? will transport you right back to Wonderfulville.
