The changing colours

Is there anything more beautiful than a landscape made of red, yellow and green? Ordinary avenues are transformed, hillsides appear aflame, and lakes look even more magical than before. Favourite views? Arrowtown, Lake Wanaka or the view over Queenstown make pretty spectacular scenes, as does the River Avon in Christchurch.

There are fewer people

With tourism peaking in the summer and winter months, autumn brings a welcome relief to the hustle and bustle on some of our streets. As much as we love welcoming people to our beautiful country, sometimes it’s nice to have some peace and quiet from the tourist buses passing through.

Orcas and dolphins

These creatures frequent Wellington harbour during the autumn months, making a perfect excuse to head to the country’s capital.

The weather is still gorgeous

Let’s face it, the weather can still be great for most of autumn, and while South Islanders might not want to brave the waters come May, coasts of the North Island can still be suitable for a dip. Just perhaps time to don a wetsuit rather than your togs!

Listening to the rain

Snuggle up inside with a blanket, Netflix and a warm bowl of soup while you listen to the rain. Is there anything more relaxing? Try this Chai roasted pumpkin soup with honey walnuts

Knitwear

Scarves, jumpers, comfy cardies. There’s just something about knitwear which makes us feel so cosy. And as much as we like a summer dress, knits are a hell of a lot more forgiving.

Crunching leaves underfoot

There are few things more satisfying than the crunch of leaves underfoot as you take a walk in nature. And there is still time to get out into the garden and try out some of these top trends for 2016.

Hot chocolate

A warming mug of hot chocolate once you get in from the outside world is absolutely divine. For a real treat, why not pair with one of these classic sweet dishes?

Sunsets are even more beautiful

Thanks to the orange and red hues, sunsets are set to look even more spectacular than they already do.

Anzac day

Right in the middle of autumn, we all get a day off to remember brave Kiwis and Australians who died in conflict. You can even learn how to make your own Anzac poppy here.
